WHY DID YOU CHANGE YOUR ARTISTIC NAME ?

Sananda Maitreya: The Freedom to Be Himself

Sananda Maitreya’s journey towards his name began in 1995, during a period of profound personal and artistic change. His name was legally changed on 4 October 2001. The decision reflected several closely connected aspects of his life.

1. Artistic Freedom

During his early career, Sananda expressed dissatisfaction with the music industry and the constraints he felt it imposed on his creativity. International success brought expectations about who he should be and what music he should make.

Adopting the name Sananda Maitreya helped him move beyond those expectations and pursue his creative work on his own terms. It was part of a wider effort to reclaim control over his life and artistic direction.

2. Personal Transformation

The change also reflected a deeply personal journey. Sananda has long been interested in mysticism, philosophy, spirituality and the exploration of consciousness. His name became an expression of his evolving sense of self.

This was a personal and spiritual decision, rather than a declaration of religious affiliation. Its significance lies in what it means to Sananda and in his freedom to define his own identity.

3. Reclaiming His Musical Legacy

Between 1987 and 1995, Sananda achieved international recognition with his first four albums: Introducing the Hardline, Neither Fish Nor Flesh, Symphony or Damn and Vibrator. Alongside that success came pressures and comparisons that affected his relationship with the industry and his public persona.

Changing his name allowed him to redefine that relationship while continuing to value the music he had created. Those recordings remain part of his artistic history.

With Juvenilia -The Columbia Years (2026), all four albums have now been reissued under the name Sananda Maitreya. This is an important milestone, bringing his earliest works under his chosen and legal name and recognising the artist behind them.
