The Evolution of an Artist: From TTD to Sananda Maitreya

A Journey of Transformation

Sananda Maitreya is the name of the artist formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby. The journey of transformation began in 1995, when he experienced a deep personal and spiritual shift that led him to start letting go of the identity associated with his former name. In 2001, the name change became legal, marking the formal beginning of his life and career as Sananda Maitreya.

While the name Terence Trent D’Arby was once tied to global fame and chart-topping success, it also became a persona that no longer reflected the man behind the music. Over time, carrying that name became painful and unsustainable. Stepping away from it was an act of survival and self-respect.

“Terence Trent D’Arby was dead. He watched his suffering go and when he died, the suffering died with him.”
                     – Sananda Maitreya

The name Sananda Maitreya represents his freedom to live authentically and create without compromise, from a place of peace, clarity, and personal truth. It was not a religion-driven choice, but rather a deeply individual and artistic one. Since embracing this new identity, he has released a vast catalogue of music through his independent label, TreeHouse Publishing.

A Personal Request

We respectfully ask that the former name not be used in interviews, articles, promotional materials, or public conversations. While that chapter is part of his story, it is no longer part of his identity. Hearing the old name can be emotionally triggering and reopens wounds that Sananda has spent many years healing.

He welcomes dialogue about his career in full, past and present, as long as it honours the man he is today.

Thank You

Sananda is deeply grateful for those who have supported his evolution and embraced his music through all its phases. Your respect for his name and his journey is more than appreciated, it is essential.
